Custom Overlay
The following notes explain how to create an image file required to print a custom overlay with a Javelin card printer.
Note: if you use this effect you are removing part of the overlay from the card. Any colour design (eg graphics or photos) in the area where you print the overalay will not be protected against UV or abrasion and may not last as long as the rest of the elements covered by the overlay.
The sample image file was created using Paint Shop Pro. A trial version may be downloaded from the Jasc Software web site.
If you prefer to use another graphics package, then the specification of the file is as follows:
- Windows bitmap file (uncompressed)
- 1029 x 645 pixels
- 2 bits per pixel
Wherever there is black in the image, the printer will lay down overlay. Wherever there is white in the image, the printer will not lay down the overlay. Note: this has changed over the years. Depending on the version of your driver, this information may be reversed. Be sure to look at the actual ribbon to make sure you are printing mainly overlay!
Download the sample overlay bitmap image file by clicking on the link. Notice that the NBS logo is not entirely white. There is some grey which is designed to limit the negative effect outlined in bold above.
To actually use the overlay file with the driver:
- Click the Advanced... button on the Printing Preferences dialog.
-
Expand the Ribbon branch and click Front Overlay varnish...
- Change the Select varnish type combo box to read "Bitmap - based overlay varnish."
-
Use the Browse... button to select the file
That's it! Try a test print.
